I must admit I was one of those people. I used to choose excuses over results. I used to say: it is raining, it is too late to train, the gym is too far away…
One day I realized, after speaking to an old school body builder, that the only problem was my mind set. I said to him: “Yes, it is easy for you to train regularly if you have a gym member card and a room full of weights”. He smiled and said: “This lifestyle is 100% dedication. You don’t live all year round next to a Gym, sometimes, imagination is more important than you could ever think”.
In Einstein words: “Logic will make you from A to B, but imagination will take you everywhere”. It wasn’t until I was on holidays in Spain when I realized I really had to make the best out of what I had. It was difficult for me to hit a Gym with my busy holiday schedule and I still had two weeks in front till I returned to Germany to mine. If I really wanted so bad to train I had to put my brain to work. Siting on a bank in a park I started analyzing the view in front of me: all of a sudden, the banks from the park looked to me as a perfect replacement for the banks of my gym, the playground area for kids seemed like a pretty good option for doing monkey bars and pull ups. Sprinting up the stairs of the subway entrance next to the park was a great HIIT exercise. (I tried to recreate in the pictures you see below the exercises I did back then).
I started liking more and more this challenge of using the environment in my favor. And slowly by slowly started changing my way of thinking: “If it its important for you, you will find a way. If not, you will find excuses”.
That is why I love to much the new Reebok campaign “Gym Is Everywhere“. I am currently preparing myself for my first Spartan race and I am trying my best to use my imagination whenever I am training outside. I just don’t limit myself to running next to the river; I now carry my jumping rope always in my handbag, perform jumping squats in park banks, jump obstacles and use buildings as the ideal assistance when stretching.
The gym is actually everywhere. You just need a bit of inspiration and the right mind set to make the best you can out of what you have. If you really want to get fit let me tell you a secret: you don’t need a gym. You just need power of will.
Exercising outside will offer you an entire world of possibilities: it is so beneficial to train breathing fresh air, feeling the freedom of not being trapped in between walls…And to the proudness you feel after training, you will add the personal satisfaction of beeing able to overcome mental obstacles and prove yourself how good you are at training a big asset: imagination.
